**Giveaway** Thirst of Steel - Ronie Kendig

Thirst of Steel by Ronie Kendig
(book 3 in The Tox Files series)
Pages: 459
Publisher: Bethany House
Date: July 31, 2018

About the book (from the back cover):

The final conflict will hinge on one of history's most dangerous blades...

Dismantled centuries ago, the sword of Goliath is still rumored to thirst for its enemies' blood.  Cole "Tox" Russell wants only to put the dangers of his past behind him and begin his new life with Haven Cortes.  First, though, he's called to complete a final mission: retrieve the sword and destroy the deadly Arrow & Flame Order.

The AFO, however, is determined to reunite the sword.  Threatening the life of Ram and Tzivia's father, they jeopardize Ram's long-held and dangerous secret while demanding Tzivia locate the blade.  With the Wraith team slowly being torn apart, things worsen when Mercy Maddox, a new operative, emerges with the stunning news that the artifact is tied to both Ram's secret and a string of unsolved serial murders.

Tox, Ram, and the others are forced to set aside fear and anger to target the true enemy.  No matter the cost, Wraith must destroy the AFO...or join them in the flames.

My thoughts...

While I'm not normally a fain of historic fiction, this is one series that I have thoroughly enjoyed.  Kendig does a nice job of alternating historic facts with suspense and a tad of romance.  Skillfully written and carefully plotted, the story-line throughout all 3 books nicely connects the characters and easily draws the reader in.  This is a series, however, that should be read in order, especially if the reader wants the full story.  I cannot stress enough how much I have enjoyed reading The Tox Files!  I give this book 5 stars!

Erin Healy Interview

Erin Healy’s latest supernatural thriller, Stranger Things, comes to stores on New Year’s Eve.

Library Journal says: “Serena Diaz’s teaching career came to an abrupt end when a student falsely accused her of sexual misconduct. Seeking solace in the woods, she discovers that a gang of sex traffickers has taken over a vacant house. Serena is almost captured by one of the criminals but is saved by an unknown man who has been shadowing her. He is shot, and Serena escapes with her life. But she is drawn to know more about this stranger who died for her. What follows is a suspenseful story of danger and pure evil. Whom can Serena trust in a world that seems intent on serving its own self-interests? VERDICT Healy (Afloat; coauthor with Ted Dekker, Burn and Kiss) has written an edgy, fast-paced spiritual thriller that will please Dekker fans.”

How was your idea for Stranger Things born?

Two years ago, during a Good Friday service, my pastor (Kelly Williams of Vanguard Church, Colorado Springs) asked the congregation: “If a complete stranger died while saving your life, wouldn’t you want to know everything you could about that person? Wouldn’t you want your life to honor that person’s death?” He challenged us to consider Jesus Christ in a new light—as a stranger, as a savior we might not know as well as we think we do. This idea has roots in Romans 5:8—“While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Before I ever had the chance to know him, while he was a complete stranger to me, Christ died for me. The Message translation says “when [I was] of no use whatever to him.” Why would he do that? Have I investigated him thoroughly enough to connect my own life with his purposes? This is all background, though. Stranger Things isn’t an overtly Christian tale as my previous novels have been, but it’s a parable about these questions.

Stranger Things sounds like a pretty dark read. Why did you choose to write about sex trafficking?

Human trafficking (of which sex trafficking is a subcategory) is the world’s third-fastest growing illegal industry behind drugs and weapons. It is the most horrifying kind of modern captivity I can imagine, and my research proved that even my imagination fell short of reality. I picked it because it’s a real contemporary crisis, but also because it profoundly symbolizes the kind of bondage that Christ came to end (Isaiah 61:1-3). Freeing the captive, physically and spiritually, is a high calling for followers of Jesus who want to express their gratitude for his sacrifice and demonstrate his love through the continuation of his work.

What does all this have to do with the “thin places” that you’re always talking about?

The traditional (Celtic) definition of a thin place is a physical location in the world where the division between physical and spiritual realities falls away, a place where we can see the greater truth of our existence. In my stories I use the term “thin place” to define moments when a person experiences a sharpened spiritual awareness about what’s really going on in his or her life. Stranger Things  is the first novel in which I’ve combined both ideas. The thin place is a physical location, a burned-out house in a sparse terrain, where Serena discovers her purpose. “There are places in the world where you will encounter things so real that you will be surprised others don’t have an identical experience,” Serena’s father tells her. “But then you will realize that the clarity given to you is a gift from God. Perhaps this gift is just for you, maybe also it will touch the lives of others.”

Did anything surprise you while writing the novel?

I started with intentions to write about an Asian-based trafficking ring, but in the course of my research was distressed to learn just how close to home the problem lies. Though it’s impossible to get a precise count of how many people are victims of sex trafficking in the US, most estimates fall between 100,000 and 300,000 (mostly women and children). Since I learned this my own awareness has expanded, and I’m happy to see just how many efforts are already underway—not only in the US—to end this atrocity. The Polaris Project is a great place to begin learning about global human trafficking.

What do you hope readers will take away from Stranger Things?

I hope the novel is layered enough to meet each reader individually. Maybe some will be challenged to investigate Jesus Christ further. Maybe some will use their new awareness of trafficking to do something about it. (I’ve joined the prayer team of a local home for girls rescued from sexual slavery.) To date my favorite response to the book was from the person who found herself looking in a new way at the strangers who surrounded her. She felt unexpectedly protective and concerned, on heightened alert to ways in which she might be able to help them. In other words, ways in which she might be able to do what Christ did for her. So many opportunities! If we all moved through the world with eyes like that, what might change for the better? I love to think of all the possibilities.

The Fiddler - Beverly Lewis; Review and Giveaway

Winner Announced, see widget below...

About the book...

Come home to Hickory Hollow, Pennsylvania -- the beloved setting where Beverly Lewis's celebrated Amish novels began --with new characters and new stories of drama, romance, and the ties that draw people together.

A wrong turn in a rainstorm leads Englisher Amelia Devries to Michael Hostetler -- and the the young Amishman's charming Old Order community of Hickory Hollow.  Despite their very different backgrounds, Amelia and Michael both feel hemmed in by the  expectations of others and struggle with how to find room for their own hopes.  And what first seems to be a chance encounter might just change their lives forever.

My thoughts...

Yes, I am a big fan of Beverly Lewis.  Yes, I have seen the musical, The Confession, at the Blue Gate Theater in Shipshewana, Indiana!  No, I have not read an Amish Christian Fiction novel written from the male perspective before!

The Fiddler, first in the Home to Hickory Hallow series, is such an outstanding book that I had a difficult time putting down!  As mentioned previously though, it was a little different switching my mind over to the male perspective.  I like to visualize the characters as I am reading, and usually picture the female that is featured on the cover of the book.  I had to keep reminding myself that the opening thoughts were coming from an Amish MAN, not an Amish WOMAN.  Once I got past that, the pages seemed to fly by!

I loved reading of Amelia's struggles, and how closely they paralleled Micheal's in his own life. They were two completely different people, from two different worlds, yet battling with similar feelings toward their families.

Another positive for me was the inclusion of some of Lewis's previous characters from her other books.  Just a mention here or there, but it was nice to see what they were up to!

I give this book 5 stars and cannot wait for the next one to come out later this year!

**I received this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest opinions**

Exciting Giveaway!

Fields of Home Series

Are you looking for a great new Amish series to read?
Author Jerry S. Eicher has generously given me the first 2 books in this set to give away to one of my lucky readers!  Did I mention that he autographed both books?  I love working with authors, helping to spread the word about great Christian Fiction!

Want to know more about these books?  Read on...

Book 1 - Missing Your Smile (taken from the back cover)

When Susan Hostetler has a falling out with her boyfriend, Thomas Stoll, she leaves her Amish home and moves to Asbury Park, New Jersey, to experiment in Englisha Life.  There she learns to drive a car, takes her GED test, and dates young and handsome Duane Moran.  Back home, her parents are devastated and miss their daughter terribly.  But what can they do?  Susan has a mind of her own.

Just as Susan is enjoying her new life, her plans are interrupted.  She meets Teresa Long, a young, unwed, expectant mother who asks Susan to help her have her baby adopted by an Amish family.

As Susan is drawn is drawn into the young woman's life, she also finds herself drawn back to her Amish roots.  When her relationship with Duane ends, can her heart truly return to the life she has left behind...and to Thomas, who is waiting for her?

Book 2 - Following Your Heart (taken from the back cover)

When Susan Hostetler returns to her Amish community after life in the outside world, she brings trouble with her in the form of her Englisha friend, Teresa Long, and Teresa's newborn, fatherless son.  Teresa has come in hopes of settling with the Amish people and raising her son in their faith.

Deacon Ray gets wind of the situation and forbids the unwed mother from attending the church services, fearing she will pollute the young people of the community.  But soon Teresa has two suitors among the Amish--Yost Byler, the community's resident bachelor, and Deacon Ray's son James.

With two Amish men interested in her, Teresa has a decision to make...and so does Susan.  Will Susan stay in the community and marry Thomas, the sturdy man who proclaims his love for her...or will she also follow her heart?

My thoughts...

As reluctant as I first was reading a Christian Fiction/Romance novel by a man, I have come to LOVE reading Eicher's books!  Even if you've never given a book by the male perspective a chance, I urge you to enter this contest...what do you have to lose?  Enter today, and who knows, you may just find yourself a new favorite author!  Check back daily for more chances to enter!

Shadows on the Sand - Gayle Roper

From the back cover of the book...

"She serves him breakfast at her cafe every morning...but he never seems to notice her.  Carrie Carter's small cafe in Seaside, New Jersey, is populated with a motley crew of locals...although Carrie only has eyes for Greg Barnes.  He's recovering from a vicious crime that three years ago took the lives of his wife and children -- and from the year he tried to drink his reality away.  While her heart does a happy Snoopy dance at the sight of him, he never seems to notice her.

When Carrie's dishwasher is killed and her young waitress disappears, Greg finds himself drawn into helping Carrie solve the mysteries...and into her life.  But when Carrie's own painful past becomes all too present, her carefully constructed world begins to sink."

My Thoughts on the book...

While I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it started out a tad slow in the beginning.  Not slow enough to make me want to abandon it, but just not at a pace that I couldn't put it down.  After a chapter or two, the pace started to pick up, and I was becoming hooked!

It's not until you are well in to the book do you come to understand Carrie's full background from her growing up years.  She always seems to have a secret about her, a hidden past.  The same can be said for Greg, he shares little information of the family he once had.  While I enjoyed reading of their story, at times I felt as if they weren't the main characters of the book.

Almost more exciting or interesting, is the story of Andi, a young girl with a troubled past, including a link to "The Way", a religious cult of sorts, run by "Michael, the arch angel".  Just what does this young lady know of the dishwashers death, and is her rough boyfriend involved more than she cares to admit?

If you're looking for a good "Seaside Mystery", than this is the book for you!  I would love to hear what seaside city or resort is your favorite place to visit, or day dream of!  Make sure you sign up on the right to become a follower so you don't miss a review or giveaway again!

By the way, in case your wondering, I give this book 4 stars, and would highly recommend it!

**I received this book for free from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group and was not required to post a positive review.
